Martin Eric Ain's Life
Early Life and Music Beginnings
Martin Eric Ain was born in the United States in 1967. English was his first language.
In May 1984, a pioneering extreme metal band called Hellhammer broke up. But two of its members, guitarist and singer Thomas Gabriel Fischer and bassist Martin Eric Ain, decided to form a new band. In June of that same year, they started Celtic Frost.
Celtic Frost's Journey
Celtic Frost quickly released their first album, Morbid Tales, in November 1984. This was followed by To Mega Therion in 1985, which many people consider their most influential record. Martin Eric Ain was not on this album, as another musician named Dominic Steiner played bass. However, Ain returned to the band after the album was finished.
In 1987, the band released Into the Pandemonium, which was a very experimental album. After touring North America, the band faced some difficulties and decided to break up for a while.
Six months later, Thomas Gabriel Fischer started Celtic Frost again with new members, but Martin Eric Ain was not part of this lineup. This new group recorded Cold Lake in 1988, which was not as popular with fans. Martin Eric Ain rejoined the band for their 1990 album, Vanity/Nemesis. This was their last original album for several years.
Celtic Frost came back together in 2001. They released a highly praised album called Monotheist in 2006. The band eventually broke up again in 2008 when their frontman, Tom Gabriel Fischer, left.
Life Outside Music
After earning money from Celtic Frost's success in the 1980s, Martin Eric Ain became an entrepreneur, meaning he started his own businesses. He owned a successful DVD shop and a bar in Zürich, Switzerland, called Acapulco.
Ain was also a co-owner of a music club named Mascotte. This club became well-known for hosting new international bands. Starting in 2004, he hosted a fun show called "Karaoke from Hell" every Tuesday night at the Mascotte.
Other Music Projects
Martin Eric Ain also sang the main vocals for the song "A Dying God Coming into Human Flesh" on Celtic Frost's last album, Monotheist. He played a left-handed Warwick bass for the second half of his time with the band.
In 2012, he worked on a project called "Lieder zum Schluss" with his long-time friend Jan Graber, released under the name Graber.
In 2015, Ain started a new band with other musicians and artists from Zürich. These included Thomas Ott (a Swiss comic artist), Markus Edelmann (from the band Coroner), Stefano Mauriello, and Alain Kupper. The songs they wrote were released after Ain's death in 2019 under the band name Tar Pond. Their album is called Protocol of Constant Sadness and has four songs. The band Tar Pond continues today with Monika Schori playing bass.
In 2017, Ain worked with Swiss classical composer Balz Trümpy and his son Samuel Trümpy on a piece called "Der Dorn." This was released in 2018 as a special 7-inch vinyl record.
Martin Eric Ain passed away on October 21, 2017, after having a heart attack.
