Martin Haverty (born in 1809, died in 1887) was an important Irish journalist and historian. He wrote about history and traveled a lot, sharing his experiences in books and newspaper articles.

About Martin Haverty's Life

Martin Haverty was born in County Mayo, Ireland, on December 1, 1809. He went to school at the Irish College, Paris, where he learned a lot. In 1836, he moved to Dublin, the capital of Ireland.

The next year, in 1837, he started working for a newspaper called the Freeman's Journal. He worked there for many years, until 1850.

In 1851, Martin Haverty went on a long trip across Europe. He wrote many articles for newspapers about his travels. When he came back to Dublin, he got a job as a sub-librarian at a place called the King's Inns. He worked there for almost 25 years. His main job was to create a big index to help people find books in the library.

Martin Haverty passed away in Dublin on January 18, 1887. He was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery. His brother was Joseph Patrick Haverty.

Martin Haverty wrote several books, mostly about history and his travels:

  • Wanderings in Spain in 1843: This book, published in 1844, was about his travels in Spain.
  • The History of Ireland, Ancient and Modern: This was a big history book about Ireland, published in 1860. He used old Irish records and notes from his travels to write it. A bigger version of this book came out in 1885.
  • The History of Ireland, Ancient and Modern, for the use of Schools and Colleges: Also published in 1860, this was a simpler version of his history book, made for students in schools and colleges.
