Marty Indian School facts for kids
Marty Indian School is a special kind of school for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. It is located in Marty, South Dakota. This school is a tribal boarding school, which means some students live there during the school year.
The school works with the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). The BIE helps support schools for Native American students. Marty Indian School is found on the Yankton Indian Reservation. The Yankton Sioux Tribe actually owns the school buildings and runs the school directly. This means the tribe makes the decisions about how the school operates.
Students in grades 7 through 12 can choose to live at the school. There are separate dorms, or living areas, for boys and girls.
School History
The school has a long history of educating young people. In the 1990s, Laurel Vermillion was the principal, leading the school during that time.
More recently, Timothy Stathis became the principal in May 2017. He tried a new idea to help teachers. He wanted to give teachers extra pay if their students did very well on tests. This idea caused some disagreement among people at the school. On November 15, 2017, some people held a "sit-in" to show they did not agree with his plans. A sit-in is a peaceful protest where people sit down and refuse to leave. Mr. Stathis's time as principal at the school ended in December 2017.
