Mary Anne Abercromby (born around 1752 – died February 11, 1821) was an important Scottish lady. She was known as a peeress, which means she held a special noble title. Mary Anne was also a well-known person in society. She was married to a brave soldier, General Ralph Abercromby.
Becoming a Baroness
Mary Anne was the daughter of John Menzies and Ann Campbell. She received a special title, becoming the 1st Baroness Abercromby. This title was given to her by the King on May 28, 1801. It was a way to honor her husband, Sir Ralph Abercromby.
Sir Ralph was a very brave general. He was badly hurt during a battle in Alexandria in 1801. He later died from his injuries. The King gave Mary Anne the title of Baroness to recognize her husband's amazing courage and service. When Mary Anne died in 1821, her oldest son, George, took over the title.
