Mary Beckett (1926–2013) was a talented Irish author. She wrote many stories and books, including novels for adults and fun books for children. Her stories often shared a glimpse into life in Ireland.
Mary Beckett's Life Story
Mary Beckett was born in Belfast, which is in Northern Ireland. She went to St. Dominic's High School when she was younger. After that, she studied at St. Mary's Teacher Training College. She became a teacher.
Later, Mary got married and moved to Dublin, the capital city of Ireland. She continued her work as a teacher there. Mary Beckett had five children.
Becoming a Writer
Mary Beckett started her writing journey in the 1950s. She wrote plays for the radio, which were broadcast by BBC Northern Ireland. During this time, she also had several short stories published in different places.
She took a break from publishing for a while. It wasn't until she was in her fifties that she began to publish her work again. Her first book was a collection of her earlier short stories. It was called A Belfast Woman and came out in 1980.
After that, she wrote another book of stories titled A Literary Woman (1990). Mary Beckett also wrote a novel, which is a longer story, called Give Them Stones (1987). Besides her books for adults, she wrote several wonderful books especially for children. Some of these include Orla was Six, Orla at School, A Family Tree, and Hannah, or the Pink Balloons.
