Mary Monck (born Molesworth) was a famous writer and a very beautiful woman who lived from about 1677 to 1715. She was known for her poems and translations.
Her Life Story
Mary Monck was born around 1677. Her father was Robert Molesworth, who held the title of Viscount Molesworth. Her mother was Letitia Coote. Letitia's father was Lord Coloony, and her brother was Richard, Earl of Bellamont.
Mary Monck married George Monck. They lived in Dublin, in an area called St Stephen's Green. Mary and George had two daughters and one son. Their eldest daughter, Sarah, passed away in 1739. Their son, Henry Stanley Monck, died in 1745. Mary Monck herself passed away in Bath in 1715.
Her Writings and Poems
Mary Monck was a very dedicated learner. She taught herself several languages, including Latin, Italian, and Spanish. She also read many English books and poems.
Soon after she died, a book of her poems was published in 1716. It was called Marinda. Poems and Translations upon several occasions. This book included many of her original poems and her translations of other works.
Mary Monck wrote some very touching poems for her husband just before she died. These special verses were not in her own published book. However, they were later printed in a collection of poems called Poems by Eminent Ladies. This collection was put together by George Colman and Bonnell Thornton.
