Mary Montagu Douglas Scott, Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry (born September 17, 1900 – died February 9, 1993), was an important figure in British high society. She was known as the Duchess of Buccleuch from 1935. Mary came from a well-known family with connections to royalty.

Early Life and Family Connections

Mary Montagu Douglas Scott was born Mary Lascelles. Her father was Major William Frank Lascelles. Her grandfather was a famous diplomat named Frank Lascelles. Her mother was Lady Sybil Evelyn de Vere Beauclerk. Through her mother's side, Mary was a descendant of King Charles II of England. This means she had a very old and interesting family tree!

Marriage and Children

On April 21, 1921, Mary married Walter Montagu Douglas Scott. He later became the 8th Duke of Buccleuch and the 10th Duke of Queensberry. After their marriage, she became known as the Duchess of Buccleuch. They had three children together:

  • Lady Elizabeth Diana Montagu Douglas Scott (born 1922 – died 2012)
  • Walter Francis John Montagu Douglas Scott (born 1923 – died 2007), who later became the 9th Duke of Buccleuch
  • Lady Caroline Margaret Montagu Douglas Scott (born 1927 – died 2004)

Later Years and Legacy

The Duchess lived a long life. She passed away at the age of 92 on February 9, 1993. She died at Boughton House, a grand historic home. She was buried next to her husband at Melrose Abbey, a beautiful old ruin in Scotland.
