Mary Peterson (midwife)
Mary Peterson, a respected Alutiiq healer and midwife.

Mary Peterson (born September 18, 1927 – died December 5, 2020) was an Alutiiq midwife and healer. She lived in the village of Akhiok on Kodiak Island, Alaska. Mary was special because she combined traditional Alutiiq ways with Russian Orthodox customs in her work.

Early Life and Traditions

When Mary was a young girl, she learned many important skills. She picked berries, fished, and gained knowledge about her ancestors' traditions. These included things like basket weaving and how to dry and smoke fish. She learned these things by watching and doing, which is called "tacit knowledge."

Her Work as a Midwife and Healer

Mary Peterson learned how to be a midwife by working with older, experienced midwives, like Irene Agnot. This is called an apprenticeship. After helping to deliver 25 babies in her area, she was chosen to be the official midwife for Akhiok.

Mary often called her people "Aleut," which was a name given to the native community by Russian traders long ago. Since the 1970s, the culture has been officially called "Alutiiq." Mary was proud of her heritage, which sometimes included Russian or other European parts, showing how cultures can mix over time. For example, she would often sing "Orthodox Christmas songs in Alutiiq and Slavonic."

Mary used both old and new methods in her work. She kept traditional Alutiiq practices, like making sure new mothers stayed warm and relaxed. She also used modern nursing ideas. In Alutiiq culture, midwives are seen as more than just birth helpers; they are also healers. They are believed to be connected to the spiritual world. Giving birth is seen as a very important event that goes beyond everyday life. It needs a midwife who deeply understands the land and the wisdom passed down by elders. This special knowledge made Mary an expert healer. Like many midwives of her time, she followed these traditions while also practicing Russian Orthodoxy.

Her Legacy

Mary Peterson passed away on December 5, 2020, at the age of 93. She died at the Chiniak Bay Elder House in Kodiak, Alaska. She had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who loved her very much. A book about her life and work, called Birth and Rebirth on an Alaskan Island: The Life of an Alutiiq Healer by Joann B. Mulcahy, was published in 2001. This book helps share her story and her important contributions.
