Mary Stanley, Countess of Derby, was an important English lady who lived a long time ago. She was born Lady Mary Sackville-West on June 23, 1823, and passed away on December 6, 1900. She was known as a "political hostess," which means she often held parties and gatherings where important politicians and leaders would meet and discuss ideas.

Mary Stanley's Family Life

Mary was the daughter of George Sackville-West, 5th Earl De La Warr. She was the sixth of his nine children.

First Marriage and Children

In 1847, Mary married James Gascoyne-Cecil, 2nd Marquess of Salisbury. They had five children together:

  • Lord Sackville Arthur Cecil (born 1848, died 1898)
  • Lady Mary Arabella Arthur Cecil (born 1850, died 1903)
  • Lady Margaret Elizabeth Cecil (born 1850, died 1919)

  • Lord Lionel Cecil (born 1853, died 1901)

Her first husband, Lord Salisbury, passed away in April 1868. His son from his first marriage became the next Marquess.

Second Marriage

Lady Mary married again in 1870. Her second husband was Edward Henry Stanley, 15th Earl of Derby.
