University of Maryland facts for kids
The University of Maryland, College Park is a big public university in College Park, Maryland. People often just call it the University of Maryland. It's the largest school in a group of universities called the "University System of Maryland."
History of the University of Maryland
The university started in 1856 as the Maryland Agricultural College. It was a school focused on farming.
About 60 years later, the state of Maryland took over the college. They changed its name to Maryland State University.
In 1920, this university joined with other special schools nearby. Together, they became what we now know as the University of Maryland. In 1925, it became part of the Association of American Universities. This is a group of top research universities.
