What is Marylone?
Marylone is a short, narrow street that you enter from Southgate Street. You'll find its entrance through an old archway. This same archway also leads to the historic Crypt School.
What You See Along the Lane
On one side of Marylone, you'll see the quiet graveyard of St Mary de Crypt church. On the other side, there are buildings that are now used by businesses. Imagine walking through this lane and seeing history all around you!
A Glimpse into History
Marylone has a very old past. It was likely first planned way back in the 10th century. This was during a time when the city of Gloucester was being reorganized. The person in charge of this big project was Queen Æthelflæd. She was a powerful leader and the daughter of the famous King Alfred.
During the medieval period, Marylone was much longer than it is today. It used to stretch all the way to the eastern city wall! Now, it's a cozy spot, often filled with outdoor seating for a local cafe called Cafe Rene.
The Street's Paving
The ground you walk on in Marylone is also quite interesting. The street is paved with a type of stone called carboniferous limestone. This stone is very old, formed from the remains of sea creatures millions of years ago. Along the edges of the street, you'll also see borders made of small, rounded stones called cobbles.
