María Elisa Rivera Díaz was born in 1887 in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. She was a very important person in the history of medicine in Puerto Rico. She became one of the very first women from the island to become a doctor.
María Elisa Rivera Díaz graduated from the Women's Medical College of Baltimore. She finished her medical studies in 1909. What's even more amazing is that she graduated with the highest honors! This means she was one of the best students in her class. Right after graduating, she started her own medical practice.
A Pioneer in Medicine
María Elisa Rivera Díaz was a true pioneer. She was one of the first four women from Puerto Rico to earn a medical degree. The other three women were Ana Janer, Palmira Gatell, and Dolores Piñero.
Breaking Barriers
María Elisa Rivera Díaz and Ana Janer both graduated in the same year, 1909. This means they were both among the very first female doctors from Puerto Rico. Their achievements opened doors for many other women who wanted to study medicine.
