Story Plot
The story begins with Mr. Brainfright, a teacher at Northwest Southeast Central School. He decides to wear a banana mascot suit to support his school in the big Northwest Interschool Sports Event. But then, he gets super obsessed with bananas! He starts boring his class with all his banana talk, which is very unusual for him.
Mr. Brainfright tries to help his students prepare for the sports event by teaching them to imagine winning. Meanwhile, Mr. Grunt, their tough sports teacher, makes them do 50 laps around the oval if they don't do well.
The big sports event finally arrives! It's a very close competition between the two schools. Suddenly, Henry McThrottle has to take over as the banana mascot because Mr. Brainfright has "mascot madness." Henry is really scared to wear the suit. He used to be a mascot for a place called the Banana Emporium and accidentally caused a car crash there. But his friend Fiona tells him it wasn't his fault.
During the decathlon, Northwest West Academy's mascot, a real pit bull terrier named Chomp, attacks Henry! Henry starts running as fast as he can in the banana suit, with Chomp chasing him. They end up breaking the speed record for all the decathlon events!
One judge decides that Chomp's extra weight helped Henry during the pole vault. Because of this, Northwest Southeast Central School wins the event by just one point! This victory ends Northwest West Academy's long winning streak.
After the event, Mr. Brainfright is no longer obsessed with bananas because he doesn't have his banana suit anymore. Mr. Grunt becomes the sports teacher for Northwest West Academy. This means Northwest West Academy won't win next year, as Mr. Brainfright takes over Mr. Grunt's old job. Fred and Clive, two students who told the principal about the banana suit, do not get into trouble.
The book ends with a fun chapter called "Mr. Brainfright's Guide to Banana Mascotting."
Northwest West Academy
Northwest West Academy is a made-up school in the book. This school has won the Northwest interschool sport events 49 times in a row! They are known for encouraging bullying instead of stopping it. Their students often throw things at kids from Northwest Southeast Central School and call them "LOSERS."
Important People and Pets
Mr. Constrictor
Karl "The Boa" Constrictor is the principal of Northwest West Academy. He is also a very strong wrestler. He is so good that he appears in 19 out of 20 DVDs in a box set called The Greatest Wrestlers in the History of the Entire World! He was kicked out of the World Wrestling Federation for attacking a referee, though he says the referee attacked him.
Mr. Constrictor owns a pit bull terrier named Chomp. Chomp is trained to attack bananas. Mr. Constrictor hates to lose and often threatens to squeeze people's heads. He is very good at squeezing, just like his name "Boa" suggests. He also gets very upset if anyone insults Chomp.
Chomp
Chomp is Mr. Constrictor's pet pit bull terrier. This dog is trained to attack bananas of all sizes and shapes. Chomp is known as the meanest dog by everyone at Northwest Southeast Central School.
Troy Gurgling
Troy Gurgling is the school captain of Northwest West Academy. He tells other students on the bus to throw things at the kids from Northwest Southeast Central School. He was found crying after Northwest West Academy lost the 50th Northwest interschool sport event.
50th Northwest Interschool Sport Event
During the 50th Northwest Interschool Sport Event, Northwest West Academy tried to make the other school feel bad. They held up banners with insults like "Go home losers!" and "Everybody hates Northwest Southeast Central school!"
The scores were very close until the very last event, the decathlon. That's when Henry McThrottle from Northwest Southeast Central School ran all ten events while wearing a banana suit and being chased by Chomp. Northwest Southeast Central School won the event because the judge decided Chomp's extra weight helped Henry during the pole vault.
