The Mathews–Powell House: A Glimpse into the Past
The Mathews–Powell House is a great example of homes built during the Victorian era. This means it has a unique style that was popular in the late 1800s. It stands as a reminder of the history of Queen City, Texas.
Who Built and Lived Here?
The house was built in 1878 by William Franklin Mathews (1840-1900) and his wife, Harriet India Sharp. Mr. Mathews was a farmer and a successful merchant, which means he owned a store. He moved to Queen City when the town was first started in 1877.
After 1895, the house was owned by a few different people for short periods. Then, in 1918, Ross A. Powell (1883-1937) and his wife, Gussie Boyd (who passed away in 1920), bought the house. Like Mr. Mathews, Ross Powell was also a merchant. The Powell family kept the house for more than seventy years!
What Is It Now?
The Powell family sold the house in the 1990s. Today, this historic building has a new purpose. It is now called the Antique Rose Bed & Breakfast. This means people can stay there overnight, enjoying its history and charm.
