Mathis, Missouri facts for kids
Mathis is a small, unincorporated community located in Dallas County, Missouri, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's governed by the county.
The Story Behind the Name
The community of Mathis got its name from a person named Tom Mathis. He was an early postmaster in the area. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office, which handles mail for the community.
A Short-Lived Post Office
A post office was opened in Mathis in 1903. However, it didn't stay open for very long. It closed just two years later, in 1905. Even though the post office was only there for a short time, the name "Mathis" stuck for the community.
