The Grusonia parishiorum is a type of cactus. People often call it the matted cholla or Parish club cholla. This interesting plant grows naturally in the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts. You can find it in parts of California and Arizona in the United States.
What is the Matted Cholla?
The matted cholla is a unique cactus that grows close to the ground. It spreads out like a mat, usually no taller than about 20 centimeters (about 8 inches). Imagine a small, spiky carpet!
How it Looks
This cactus has many segments, which are like its main body parts. Each segment can be up to 9 centimeters (about 3.5 inches) long and 3 centimeters (about 1 inch) wide. The surface of these segments is covered in fleshy bumps called tubercles. From these tubercles, many sharp spines stick out. These spines can be as long as 5 centimeters (about 2 inches).
Flowers and Fruit
When the matted cholla blooms, it produces pretty yellowish flowers. After the flowers, the cactus grows a fruit. This fruit is also yellow and can be quite long, up to 8 centimeters (about 3 inches).
