Matthew Gilmore was born on September 11, 1972, in Ghent, Belgium. He is a retired track cyclist. He mostly competed and was very successful for Belgium.
Even though Matthew was born in Belgium, his father, Graeme Gilmore, was an Australian racing cyclist. Matthew first raced using an Australian license. He changed to a Belgian license on June 15, 1998. He is also the nephew of Tom Simpson, a famous British racing cyclist.
Olympic Success
Matthew Gilmore achieved a big goal at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. He won a silver medal in the men's Madison event. He raced alongside his teammate, Etienne De Wilde. The Madison is a special type of track cycling race. Two riders from each team take turns racing.
Professional Cycling Teams
During his career, Matthew Gilmore rode for several professional cycling teams. In 2000, the same year he won his Olympic medal, he rode for a Danish team called Memory Card–Jack & Jones. Before that, he was part of the SPAR–RDM team. After 2000, he joined Vlaanderen–T Interim. He also rode for Mapei–Quick Step and Chocolade Jacques later in his career. He retired from professional cycling in 2007.
