Matt Hopcraft (born in 1971) is an Australian dentist. He is also a public health expert and a television cook. You might know him from MasterChef Australia!
Early Life
Matt Hopcraft grew up in country Victoria, Australia. He went to Mooroopna Secondary College. He studied a lot at university. He earned degrees in dental science and a PhD from the University of Melbourne. He also has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Deakin University.
Dental Career
After finishing his studies, Matt Hopcraft worked as a Dental Officer in the Australian Army. He also worked as a dentist in both public and private clinics.
He was in charge of assessments and exams at the Australian Dental Council. He is also an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the Melbourne Dental School. This school is part of The University of Melbourne.
From 2005 to 2016, he was a member of the Victorian branch of the Australian Dental Association. He was even the President of this group in 2011.
Sugar-Free Smiles
Matt Hopcraft is a co-director of an organization called Sugar-free Smiles. This group helps people learn about how too much sugar can harm their health. They also support the idea of a tax on sugary drinks. This tax would help make these drinks more expensive, hoping people would choose healthier options.
He has often shared his knowledge about dental health with news reporters.
MasterChef Australia
In 2015, Matt Hopcraft was chosen as one of the Top 24 contestants on the TV cooking show MasterChef Australia. He did very well, finishing in sixth place. He left the show on July 16, 2015.
After MasterChef, he released a cookbook in June 2017. It is called Food to Feed the Family.
Today, he is an Associate Professor at the Melbourne Dental School. He used to be the CEO of the Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch.
Awards and Recognition
Matt Hopcraft has received several awards for his work:
- 2004 – Colonel MGT Kenny Award for great service to the Royal Australian Army Dental Corps.
- 2010 – IADR Geriatric Oral Research Award – Post-doctoral Category.
