Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Maud is a small, quiet place located in Shelby County, in the state of Missouri, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government, like a mayor or a city council, as a city or town would. Instead, it's part of the larger county area.

The Story Behind Maud's Name

The community of Maud has an interesting history, especially when it comes to how it got its name.

Back in 1880, a special building called a post office was opened in Maud. A post office is where people send and receive letters and packages. This was a very important place for people to connect with others far away, long before emails or text messages existed!

The post office in Maud stayed open for many years, helping the community, until it closed in 1903. The person who was in charge of this post office, known as the postmaster, decided to name the entire community. He chose to name it after his own daughter, whose name was Maud Ridings. So, the community of Maud was named to honor her!
