Maude Glasgow was born in Cookstown, Ireland, in 1876. Her father was Silas Glasgow. She had a brother named James.

She went to school at Marlborough Street College in Dublin. After her studies, she moved to New York. Her sister, Janet, helped support her while she was in school.

In New York, Maude studied nursing. She earned a nursing degree from the Mount Sinai Training School for Nurses. But she wanted to learn even more about medicine.

So, she continued her education. In 1901, she earned a medical degree. She got this degree from Cornell University Medical College.

Helping Others Through Medicine

After becoming a doctor, Maude Glasgow started working for the Department of Health in New York. She became a medical inspector. This meant she checked on health conditions in the city.

She also worked for the New York Telephone Company. There, she was the main doctor for women employees. She helped keep them healthy. She also taught them about public health.

In 1921, she earned another degree. This one was in public health. She studied at New York University and Bellevue Medical College.

Maude Glasgow cared a lot about the health and success of women. She gave money to help young women study medicine. She also created a special award.

This award is called the Janet M. Glasgow Memorial Award. It is named after her sister. This award goes to the woman who finishes first in her medical school class. The American Medical Women’s Association helps manage this award. There are also special honors for women who finish in the top 10% of their class.

Fighting for Equal Rights
