The Story of "Sweet Rosie O'Grady"
In 1896, Maude wrote both the music and words for a song called "Sweet Rosie O'Grady." This song quickly became a huge hit. It was one of the most popular waltz songs of that era.
At first, a music publisher named Joseph W. Stern & Co. didn't want the song. But as Maude left their office, they changed their minds! Stern's partner, Edward Marks, even chased her down the street to offer a deal. The sheet music for "Sweet Rosie O'Grady" sold over a million copies. In 1899, the song was recorded by Lil Hawthorne for Berliner Gramophone.
Life After "Rosie O'Grady"

When Maude was 28, she stopped performing to focus on raising her family. But she never stopped writing music! In the 1940s and 1950s, old-fashioned "Gay Nineties" shows became popular again. This led Maude to start performing on television.
