May Bird and the Ever After is an exciting fantasy and action novel written by Jodi Lynn Anderson. It was first released in 2005 and is the very first book in the popular May Bird series. Atheneum Books published this adventure story.
What's the Story About?
May Bird lives with her mom and her unique cat, Somber Kitty, near a swamp in West Virginia. May loves to draw and imagine new worlds. School isn't her favorite place, and she often feels different from other kids. But in the quiet woods of Briery Swamp, May feels completely at home and safe.
In her imagination, May is a brave warrior princess, and her cat is her loyal protector. One day, something amazing happens. May accidentally falls into the lake. When she climbs out, she finds herself in a world she thought only existed in her dreams!
Entering the Ever After
This new place is filled with ghosts and other incredible creatures. It's called the Ever After, a world few living people have ever seen. Here, towns glow with a blue light, and people can walk right through walls. May's house ghost, Pumpkin, who has a pumpkin head, follows her into this strange new world to help her. Her faithful cat also follows her.
In the Ever After, there's a special book called the Book of the Dead. It holds all the answers to everything in the universe. But this world also has dangers. A terrifying villain named Bo Cleevil lives here. If he finds May, he will try to destroy her. May knows she must find a way to get back home.
May's Journey Begins
This is the start of May Bird's daring journey through the Ever After. It's a haunting place where she will meet true friends and many terrible enemies. Pumpkin helps her, and they go to see the Beekeeper Arista, who lives in a giant house shaped like a beehive.
Arista tells May that she needs to visit the Lady of North Farm. This is a place that even ghosts are afraid to go. Along her journey, May meets new friends and sees amazing sights. She faces many strange adventures and challenges. This journey will change May forever, no matter if she returns home or stays in the Ever After.
