Mary French Sheldon (born May 10, 1847 – died February 10, 1936) was an American author and explorer. She was also known by her writing name, May French Sheldon. She became famous for her travels in Africa.

Early Life and Learning

Mary French was born in Bridgewater, Pennsylvania, on May 10, 1847. Her father, Joseph French, was a civil engineer. Her mother, Elizabeth J. French, was interested in spiritualism. Mary studied in the United States and also overseas. She learned about art and became a writer and an expert in different cultures (an ethnologist).

Her Career and Adventures

In 1876, Mary married Eli Lemon Sheldon, who was a banker and writer. They moved to London, England, and started publishing companies there.

Sheldon was known for translating a famous book called Salammbô by Flaubert. She also wrote many novels, short stories, and essays.

Exploring Africa

Mary French Sheldon became very famous for an amazing trip she took. In 1891, she was inspired by her family friend, Henry Morton Stanley, who was also a famous explorer. She decided to travel to Africa.

Her journey was supported by Sir Alfred Jones. He was asked by King Leopold of Belgium to help show positive things about the Congo region. While in the Congo, she traveled on steamboats. These boats were owned by the state and its partners. They decided where she went and what she saw.

When she returned to England, Sir Alfred Jones helped her publish articles in newspapers. She gave presentations about her travels. King Leopold even paid her a monthly salary to talk to important people in the British Parliament.

Journey to Kilimanjaro

Mary French Sheldon explored around Lake Chala. Her trip from Mombasa to Mount Kilimanjaro caused a lot of excitement. This was because she traveled without another white person. However, she was not alone! She had 150 porters and guides from Zanzibar who helped her.

She returned from her trip with many items and stories about different cultures. She wrote about her experiences and gave many talks about her adventures.

Awards and Recognition

Mary French Sheldon received several awards for her display at the World's Columbian Exposition. She also became a member of important groups, like the Writer's Club. In November 1892, she was made a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. She was one of the first fifteen women to receive this special honor.

She passed away in London on February 10, 1936.
