The Mayor of Athens is the main leader of the city of Athens, Greece. This important job involves making decisions for the city and its people. The mayor helps manage everything from city services to new projects.
The current Mayor of Athens is Haris Doukas. He started his term on January 1, 2024. Mayors in Athens are chosen by the people who live in the city. They serve for five years and can be re-elected once.

Mayors in the Kingdom of Greece (1832–1924)
Athens has had many mayors throughout its history. The first mayor was chosen in 1836. During this long period, Greece was a kingdom. Many different people held the position of mayor. They helped shape Athens as it grew into a modern capital city.
Here are some of the mayors from this time:
- Anargyros Petrakis was the very first mayor, serving from 1836 to 1837. He also served a second time later.
- Angelos Gerontas was mayor twice in the early years.
- Spyridon Benizelos served for a long time, from 1843 to 1850.
- Panagis Kyriakos was mayor for almost nine years, from 1870 to 1879.
- Dimitrios Soutsos also had a long term, from 1879 to 1887.
- Spyridon Mercouris was one of the longest-serving mayors. He held the office from 1899 to 1914. He also served again later.
- Emmanouil Benakis was mayor during World War I, from 1914 to 1919.
- Spyridon Patsis served two terms, first from 1919 to 1920, and then again from 1922 to 1925.
Mayors in the Second Hellenic Republic (1924–1935)
After the Kingdom of Greece, the country became a republic for a while. This period is known as the Second Hellenic Republic. During this time, Athens continued to have elected mayors.
- Spyridon Patsis continued his term into this period, serving until 1929.
- Spyridon Merkouris, who had been mayor before, returned to office from 1929 to 1934.
- Konstantinos Kotzias became mayor in 1934. He would also serve again later.
Mayors in the Kingdom of Greece (1935–1941)
Greece became a kingdom again in 1935. During part of this period, from 1936 to 1941, Greece was under a special government called the Metaxas Regime. Mayors continued to lead the city during these changing times.
- Ambrosios Plytas served as mayor from 1936 to 1941.
- Konstantinos Mermigas was mayor for a short time in 1941.
Mayors during the Hellenic State (1941–1944)
This period was a difficult time for Greece. The country was occupied by Axis forces during World War II. Mayors were appointed to manage the city under these circumstances.
- Angelos Georgatos was mayor during the occupation, from 1941 to 1944. He worked with the occupying forces.
Mayors in the Kingdom of Greece (1944–1974)
After World War II, Greece was a kingdom again. This period saw many changes and challenges for Athens. Mayors played a key role in rebuilding the city and guiding its growth.
- Aristeidis Skliros was mayor right after the occupation ended, from 1944 to 1946.
- Ioannis Pitsikas served from 1946 to 1950.
- Konstantinos Kotzias served a third time as mayor in 1951.
- Pafsanias Katsotas was mayor from 1955 to 1959.
- Angelos Tsoukalas served from 1959 to 1964.
- Georgios Plytas was mayor from 1964 to 1967. He also continued as mayor during the military rule that followed.
During the years 1967 to 1974, Greece was under military rule, known as the Greek Junta. Mayors during this time were appointed by the military government.
Mayors in the Third Hellenic Republic (1974–present)
Since 1974, Greece has been a republic again, known as the Third Hellenic Republic. During this modern era, mayors of Athens have been elected by the citizens. They have focused on improving city life, developing infrastructure, and making Athens a better place to live.
- Konstantinos Darras was the first mayor after the military rule ended, serving from 1974 to 1975.
- Ioannis Papatheodorou was mayor from 1975 to 1979.
- Dimitris Beis served for a long period, from 1979 to 1986.
- Miltiadis Evert was mayor from 1987 to 1989.
- Antonis Tritsis served from 1991 to 1992.
- Dimitris Avramopoulos was a well-known mayor, serving two full terms from 1995 to 2002.
- Dora Bakoyannis became the first female mayor of Athens, serving from 2003 to 2006.
- Nikitas Kaklamanis was mayor from 2007 to 2010.
- Giorgos Kaminis served for a long time, from 2011 to 2019.
- Kostas Bakoyannis was mayor from 2019 to 2023.
