The mayor is the top elected leader of Atlanta, Georgia. This person helps run the city and makes important decisions. Atlanta became an official city in 1847. Since then, it has had 61 different mayors.
The current mayor is Andre Dickens. He was chosen in the 2021 election and started his job in January 2022.
Mayors in Atlanta serve for a set time called a "term of office." At first, a mayor's term was only one year. Later, around 1875, a new city charter (which is like a city's rulebook) changed it to two years. In 1929, the term became four years long. This is how long mayors serve today.
Even though mayors might belong to a political party, the election for mayor in Atlanta is "non-partisan." This means candidates don't officially represent their party when they run for mayor. However, in recent years, most candidates who have a good chance of winning have been from the Democratic Party.
