The Mayor of Hamilton is like the main leader of the city of Hamilton, New Zealand. This person is in charge of the city's government and leads the Hamilton City Council. The Mayor helps make important decisions for everyone living in Hamilton.

The current Mayor is Paula Southgate. She was first chosen by the people in the local elections held in 2019.

History of Hamilton's Mayors

Before Hamilton had a Mayor, it had two smaller groups called Town Boards. These boards looked after East and West Hamilton. On December 24, 1877, Hamilton officially became a Borough Council. This meant it could have its own Mayor.

How Mayoral Elections Changed

When the role of Mayor first started, elections happened every year. This changed in 1935, and since then, elections have been held every three years. This gives Mayors more time to work on their plans for the city. Elections used to be in December, then in April or May, and now they usually happen in October.

First Woman Mayor

In 1989, a big change happened for Hamilton. Margaret Evans became the first woman ever elected as Mayor of Hamilton. She served for many years until 1998. After her, several Mayors were not re-elected in their next election. However, Julie Hardaker was re-elected in 2013, which was a notable event.
