Mayors of Bloomfield, New Jersey facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Bloomfield, New Jersey, became an official town on March 23, 1812. It was given a special set of rules, called a Special Charter, by the state of New Jersey. This charter helps Bloomfield run its local government.

The town is led by a mayor and a group of six people called the Township Council. Together, they make important decisions for Bloomfield.

About Bloomfield's Government

How Bloomfield is Governed

Bloomfield's government is set up in a special way. The mayor and three of the council members are elected by everyone in the town. This is called being elected "at-large." The other three council members are elected from specific areas, or "wards," within Bloomfield.

All these leaders are chosen in the general election held in November. They are elected based on their political party.

Who Leads Bloomfield?

Council members serve for three years. Their terms are "staggered," which means not everyone is up for election at the same time. The mayor and the three at-large council members are elected together. Then, two years later, the three ward council members are elected.

Bloomfield's special rules are a lot like those for a traditional "Town" in New Jersey. However, an administrator also has extra powers to help manage the town's daily business.
