The McIndoes Academy is a very old school building in McIndoe Falls, Vermont. It was built in 1853. This building shows off a special design style called Greek Revival architecture. It was the main high school for the area until 1969. Because of its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. This means it's an important historical site in the United States.
What McIndoes Academy Looks Like
The old McIndoes Academy building is in the village of McIndoe Falls. It sits on the east side of United States Route 5. The building is set back from the road. You can reach it by a small lane called Academy Lane.
It is a two-and-a-half story building made of wood. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. The building sits on a strong stone foundation.
Right in the middle of the roof, there's a square bell tower. This tower has a small dome on top. A porch with a pointed roof sticks out from the front of the building. This porch has four columns. The edges of the main roof and the porch roof have fancy decorations. These look like pairs of brackets.
The main door is in the center of the front. It has narrow windows on each side. Above the door, there's a small, pointed roof shape.
The History of McIndoes Academy
The McIndoes Academy was started in 1853. Many private schools were being built in Vermont around that time. A group of local people decided to create this academy. They raised money by asking people to donate. Some people even gave building supplies or helped with the work.
William Martin, a skilled local carpenter, was in charge of building it. The academy served as the main high school for the community for many years. It taught students until 1969. After that, the building was used for other public things. It has been a library and even a museum.
