Early Life and Education
Meg Cranston was born in Baldwin, New York. She studied at Kenyon College in Ohio, earning a degree in Anthropology/Sociology in 1982. Later, she went to the California Institute of the Arts, where she received her Master of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art in 1986. She also spent time studying art in the Netherlands at the Jan van Eyck Akademie in 1988.
Her Artistic Work
Meg Cranston's art often starts with personal ideas or historical events. However, her work also explores the basic rules of art itself. She wants to show how artists can help us look at things differently.
She is currently the head of the fine arts department at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. This means she helps guide and teach new artists.
Meg Cranston has shown her art all over the world since 1988. In 1992, her work was part of a big show called "Helter Skelter" at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. She also showed her art at the important Venice Biennale in 1993.
She has received many special awards for her art. These include a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Artadia Award, and a C.O.L.A. Individual Artist's Grant. These awards recognize her talent and contributions to the art world.
