Company History
The company started a long time ago, on October 9, 1916, in Tokyo, Japan. It was first known as Tokyo Confectionery Co., Ltd. Over the years, its name changed a few times as it grew and changed what it focused on.
In 2004, Meiji Seika Pharma bought the Stauffer Biscuit Company. This company is based in York, Pennsylvania, in the United States. Stauffer Biscuit Company is famous for making animal crackers and other tasty treats.
On April 1, 2009, Meiji Seika Kaisha, Ltd. joined with another company called Meiji Dairies Corporation. They created a new main company called Meiji Holdings. This new company became a very important part of the Japanese stock market.
Two years later, on April 1, 2011, the food and healthcare parts of the business were taken over by Meiji Dairies. This led to the creation of "Meiji Co., Ltd." At the same time, Meiji Seika changed its focus completely to medicines and became "Meiji Seika Pharma Co., Ltd."
In 2014, Meiji Seika Pharma bought an Indian company called Medreich. This deal cost about $290 million. Medreich helps sell generic medicines (which are like cheaper versions of brand-name drugs) to countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa.
