Western Australia cadastral divisions
This map shows the 26 counties of Western Australia.

Melbourne County was an important area in Western Australia. It was one of the 26 original counties of Western Australia created way back in 1829. These counties were like special land divisions, used to help organize and manage the land.

Melbourne County was named after a famous person, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne. He was a very important politician in Ireland at the time. The county was given its name by Lieutenant-Governor James Stirling, who was a key figure in the early days of Western Australia.

What's really cool about Melbourne County is that it stayed mostly the same over time. It later became known as the Melbourne Land District. This land district system was super important because it helped keep track of who owned what land. It was the main way land titles (documents showing ownership) were managed in that area for many years.
