Mercier, Kansas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mercier is a small place in Kansas, United States, that doesn't have its own local government. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's part of a larger area called Mission Township, Brown County, Kansas, instead of being its own separate town or city.

The Story of Mercier

Mercier has a simple but interesting history. It started as a small settlement and grew over time.

Mercier's Post Office and Name Change

A very important part of any community is its post office. This is where people send and receive letters and packages. Mercier had a post office that opened in 1897. For many years, it helped connect the people of Mercier with the rest of the world.

Interestingly, when the post office first opened, Mercier wasn't called Mercier at all! It was known as Germantown until 1918. Sometimes, places change their names for different reasons, like to honor a new person or to reflect a change in the community. After 1918, the name officially became Mercier, and the post office continued to serve the community until 1972.
