Understanding Meridians on Maps

When we talk about "meridians" in geography, we're usually talking about imaginary lines that run from the North Pole to the South Pole. These lines help us measure longitude, which tells us how far east or west a place is.

One very important meridian is the Prime Meridian. It passes through Greenwich, England, and is used as the starting point (0 degrees longitude) for measuring all other longitudes around the world.

Meridians for Land Surveys

In the United States, especially when land was first being settled and divided, special meridians were used to create maps and define property lines. These are called principal meridians. They act like main north-south lines from which land is measured.

In Oklahoma, there are two important principal meridians:

  • The Indian meridian helps survey land in the eastern part of Oklahoma. This is the area that isn't the "panhandle" (the long, narrow strip of land in the northwest). It's located at 97° 14′ 30″ west longitude.
  • The Cimarron meridian is used for surveying land in the western part of Oklahoma, which includes the panhandle. It's located at 103° 00′ 00″ west longitude.

These meridians are super important because they help make sure that land ownership and boundaries are clear and accurate across the state.
