About the Museum's History

The Mexic-Arte Museum was started in 1983 by Sam Coronado and Sylvia Orozco. It officially became a non-profit organization in 1984. In 2003, the state of Texas recognized it as the Official Mexican American Fine Art Museum of Texas. This means it's a very important place for showing Mexican American art.

In 1988, the museum moved to its current home. It's located on Congress Avenue in Austin, a busy and well-known street.

Award-Winning Programs

The Mexic-Arte Museum also has amazing programs for young people. In 2016, their "Screen It!" program won a big award. It was one of only twelve programs in the whole country to receive the National Arts & Humanities Youth Program Award. This award celebrates programs that use art and humanities to help young people grow and learn.
