Meyer's Castle, also known as the Joseph Ernest Meyer House, is a grand building in Dyer, Indiana. It used to be a private home. This amazing castle was built between 1927 and 1931. It was designed in a special style called Jacobethan by architect Bernard Cosbey, Sr.
The castle was built for Joseph Ernest Meyer. He was a very rich man from Hammond. Joseph Meyer was also an herbologist, someone who studies and uses plants for medicine. Today, Meyer's Castle is a popular place for special events. It also has an Italian steakhouse called "Rivelli."

What is Meyer's Castle?
Meyer's Castle was built to look like a Scottish castle that Joseph Meyer had seen. When it was finished in 1931, it was the biggest and most fancy house in the whole Calumet region. The castle is located in a beautiful forest. This quiet spot was perfect for Meyer to continue his work with herbs.
The Story of Indian Hill
The castle sits on top of a hill known as "Indian Hill." This name comes from the many old items found there. These items belonged to the Sauk and Potawatomi Native American tribes. Indian Hill is also one of the highest points in Lake County, Indiana.
Who Lived in the Castle?
Joseph Meyer lived in Meyer's Castle until he passed away in 1950. After his death, his wife, Cecilia, continued to live there for many years. When Cecilia Meyer died in 1975, the castle and its large property were sold.
A New Chapter for the Castle
In 1987, the property was bought by new owners. At that time, the castle was old and needed a lot of work. The new owners worked hard to fix it up. They brought it back to its original beautiful state.
Today, Meyer's Castle is a busy place. It hosts many special events like weddings and parties. There is also a restaurant that you can visit by making a reservation. When you visit, you might even see peacocks walking around the grounds!
