Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Mi'gmawei Mawiomi Secretariat is a special group that helps lead and represent the Mi'gmaq people. They work for the Mi'gmaq communities in a place called Gespe’gewa’gi. This area is part of the larger Mi'gma'gi territory, which is the traditional land of the Mi'kmaq.

Gespe'gewa'gi has eight Mi'gmaq communities. The Mi'gmawei Mawiomi Secretariat works closely with three main groups, often called "bands." These groups are Gesgapegiag, Gespeg, and Listuguj. In 2016, these three groups had a total of 6,295 members. The main office for the Secretariat is in Listuguj.

In 2007, the Mi'gmawei Mawiomi shared an important statement with the governments of Canada and Quebec. This statement was called Nm’tginen Me’mnaq Ejiglignmuetueg Gis Na Naqtmueg, which means "Our Territory: We never gave it and We never left it." It showed their strong connection to their traditional lands.
