Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Micah Stampley was born on September 7, 1971. His parents are Richard and Delmarie Stampley. He was the fifth of eight children in his family.
Micah showed his amazing musical talent very early. By the age of four, he was already singing. When he was just seven, he was leading the church choir! He even taught others how to sing harmonies. Micah grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
As a kid, Micah listened to many different types of music. He enjoyed gospel artists like Andrae Crouch and Shirley Caesar. He also liked pop stars such as Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper.
Micah went to Natchitoches Central High School. There, he won several awards for his music. By age 13, he was helping lead the music at his father's church. He worked alongside his brother, who was also his best friend.
Micah Stampley's Music Career
Micah Stampley sang in a church in Pasadena, California, from 1994 to 1997. After that, he returned to Louisiana to work in his father's church music department.
In 1998, Micah married Heidi Jones. She was also a gospel singer and a nursing student. Heidi has been a big help in Micah's career. She even wrote several songs for his first album. In 1999, the couple moved to New Orleans. Micah became a co-choir director at a church there.
In 2003, Micah became an assistant music minister in Houston. A music director named Marcus Dawson heard Micah's voice. The next year, in January 2004, Micah won the Stellar Award Gospel Star Search competition. This led him to sign a record deal.
In March 2005, Micah released his first album, The Songbook of Micah. It was a huge success! It debuted at number three on Billboard's chart. This was a very high debut for a male gospel artist.
In 2014, Micah performed at "The Experience" in Nigeria. This is a big annual event. He shared the stage with other famous gospel singers like Donnie McClurkin. Over 600,000 people attended the event.
On May 20, 2016, he released his album To the King: Vertical Worship. This album included popular songs from his past albums. It also had new hits like "Be Lifted." This song was named one of the top new songs in 2016. The album reached number 2 on Billboard's Top Gospel Album Chart.
Micah's Unique Voice
Micah Stampley is famous for his incredible voice. He has a multi-octave vocal range. This means he can sing very low notes (like a bass) and very high notes (like a soprano). He has never had any formal vocal training.
Micah says his voice is a gift from God. He feels that God "fine-tuned" his vocal cords. He can sing very high notes naturally. He says it's amazing and he can't really explain it. He feels it happens when he senses God's presence.
His voice is often compared to Grammy winner Donnie McClurkin. Donnie is also known for his high notes in gospel music. Both singers disagree with the comparison. However, Donnie has said he greatly admires Micah's vocal skills. Micah can hold notes for a long time without his voice shaking. He makes it seem easy!
In 2005, Billboard magazine put Micah on its list of Top 10 Gospel Music Artists. AOL Black Voices also named him one of its Top 11 Gospel Geniuses.
