Early Life and Education
Micaiah Hill was born on February 22, 1856. His birthplace was Berhampore, Bengal, which is in India. His father was Revd. Samuel John Hill, and his mother was Leonora Josephina Muller.
He studied at University College, London. He earned his first degree there in 1873. Later, he got his Master of Arts degree in 1876. In 1891, he earned a Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) degree from Cambridge University.
A Career in Mathematics
Micaiah Hill became a professor of mathematics. From 1880 to 1884, he taught at Mason Science College. This college later became Birmingham University.
After that, he moved back to University College, London. He was a Professor of Pure Mathematics there from 1884 to 1907. Then, from 1907 to 1923, he was the Astor Professor of Mathematics at the University of London.
In 1894, Micaiah Hill was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very important group for scientists. He also led the Mathematical Association. He was their president in 1926 and 1927.
Micaiah Hill was one of the experts who saw some of the work of the famous mathematician Ramanujan in 1912.
Family Life
Micaiah Hill married Minnie Grace Tarbotton. Her father was Marriott Ogle Tarbotton. They got married on December 21, 1892, in Paddington.
Micaiah and Minnie had two sons. Their names were Roderic Hill and Geoffrey T. R. Hill.
