Michael P. Botticelli (born January 2, 1958) is an American government official. He worked as the director of a special office in the White House from March 2014 until the end of President Obama's time in office. This office helps to keep people healthy and safe.
He first became the acting director after the previous director, Gil Kerlikowske, left the role. Later, the United States Senate officially approved him as the director in February 2015. Before joining the White House team, Botticelli worked for the state of Massachusetts in its public health department.
Early Life and School
Michael Botticelli was born in Troy, New York. He grew up in a town called Waterford, New York. For high school, he went to Catholic Central High School.
After high school, he continued his education. He earned a first degree, called a Bachelor's degree, in psychology from Siena College. Later, he earned a Master's degree in Education from St. Lawrence University.
Michael Botticelli's Career
Michael Botticelli began working for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in 1994. He helped manage contracts for health policies from 1995 to 1996. Then, he worked as an assistant director for planning from 1996 to 2000. From 2000 to 2003, he was the chief of staff for the public health commissioner.
Gil Kerlikowske, who was leading a special office in the White House under President Barack Obama, met Botticelli during a visit to Massachusetts. Kerlikowske was impressed and asked Botticelli to become his deputy director.
In March 2014, when Kerlikowske moved to a new job, Michael Botticelli became the acting director of the office. The United States Senate then voted to confirm him as the official director in February 2015. All 92 senators voted yes, showing strong support for him.
