About Michael Coleman
Coleman was born in Forest Gate, a part of east London. His family moved to Barking when he was very young. This area was still recovering from World War II. He lived in a house on Bevan Avenue for 20 years.
The area helped him love sports. There were grass lanes that looked like mini-stadiums. He used to pretend to play in famous sports events there. These included the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and soccer games at Wembley Stadium. He even won medals for school champion in running and long jump!
Coleman shared his feelings about writing about sports. He said his Foul Football series shows the magic of soccer. It tells the strange and wonderful history of the game. It also talks about the famous people in soccer. His Angels FC series is about a junior soccer team. It shows the fun and humor of the game for young players.
Michael Coleman was 46 years old when his first children's book came out. He didn't plan to be a writer at first. He used to teach computer science at a university. His first book was about computers and was quite boring. He added some jokes to it to make it more fun.
After that, he decided to try writing more. He focused on jokes instead of computers. He found that young people enjoy jokes more than adults. So, he started writing for kids. He has written 80 books since then and is still writing! He writes both true stories (non-fiction) and made-up stories (fiction).
He said his Foul Football series is his favorite non-fiction. This is because they are all about football. For fiction, he recently finished a series called The Bearkingdom. He described these books as "dark and scary." They are different from his other books.
