Michael Coleman (born 12 May 1946) is a British author who writes fun and exciting books for children and teenagers. He is famous for his book Weirdo's War, which was nominated for the important Carnegie Medal in 1996. One of his other popular books, Net Bandits, was even turned into a movie.

Coleman has written almost 100 books! He writes both fiction stories and non-fiction books full of facts. His books cover everything from funny soccer stories to exciting adventures.

Early Life and Love for Sports

Michael Coleman was born in Forest Gate, a part of east London. Soon after he was born, his family moved to a nearby town called Barking. The area was still recovering from World War II.

Growing up, Coleman loved sports. The grassy areas near his home became his personal stadiums. He would pretend he was competing in the Olympics or playing in a big soccer final at Wembley Stadium. He was a talented athlete and won school medals for the 100-meter sprint and the long jump.

This love for sports inspired many of his books. He said, "My information series Foul Football tries to convey some of the magic I felt about the game of soccer." His Angels FC series is all about the fun of playing on a youth soccer team.

Becoming a Writer

Interestingly, Coleman didn't always want to be a writer. He first taught computer science at a university. His first book was a textbook about computers. To make it less boring, he added a few jokes.

He enjoyed writing the jokes so much that he decided to try writing more, but without the computers! After many tries, he realized that kids and teens enjoy jokes more than adults, so he started writing for them. He published his first children's book when he was 46 years old and has been writing ever since.
