Michael George Mulhall (1836–1900) was an important Irish writer, a numbers expert (called a statistician), an economist, and a newspaper editor. He helped start the Buenos Aires Standard. This newspaper became the first English-language daily newspaper in South America in 1862.
Michael Mulhall also helped write the first English book published in South America. It was called The Handbook of the River Plate. This book was printed many times and helped many people who moved to the area. Today, it's a valuable historical source. His book Dictionary of Statistics, first published in 1883, became a very important reference book for facts and figures.
Michael Mulhall's Life Story
Michael Mulhall was born in Dublin, Ireland, on September 29, 1836. He was the third son of Thomas Mulhall. He studied to become a priest at the Irish College in Rome. However, he decided that this was not the right path for him.
He then moved to Argentina to work with his brother, Edward Thomas Mulhall. His brother was a large sheep farmer there. In 1861, Michael and Edward Mulhall started the Buenos Aires Standard newspaper. The next year, it began printing every day. This newspaper was very popular with the British community in Argentina. It was known as the only English daily newspaper published south of the equator. Michael's third brother, Francis Healey Mulhall, also moved to Argentina and started another newspaper called Southern Cross.
By 1864, even though he was still quite young, Michael Mulhall was seen as a leader for the entire British community in the region.
In 1878, Michael Mulhall married Marion McMurrough Murphy. Marion was also a writer. She wrote books like Between the Amazon and the Andes and Explorers in the New World. She worked closely with Michael on his important statistical books. Michael Mulhall passed away in Dublin on December 13, 1900.
