Michael Murphy studied medicine at University College Cork (UCC). He finished his first degree in 1973. After that, he continued his studies at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London, England. He then earned a special doctorate degree from the National University of Ireland in 1984.

Teaching and Research
From 1984 to 1992, Dr. Murphy taught medicine and a subject called pharmacology. Pharmacology is the study of how medicines work. He taught at the University of Chicago in the United States.
In 1992, he came back to Ireland and to UCC. There, he became a Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. A professor is a very high-ranking teacher at a university.
Leading University College Cork
In 2000, Dr. Murphy became the dean of the faculty of medicine and health at UCC. A dean is a leader of a specific part of the university, like a department. In 2006, he became the head of the college of medicine and health.
In December 2006, it was announced that he would be the next President of University College Cork. He officially started this important job on February 1, 2007. He took over from Gerry Wrixon. Dr. Murphy stepped down as president in 2017 after leading UCC for ten years. Patrick G. O'Shea became the new president after him.

Besides his work at universities, Dr. Murphy also worked as a doctor. He practiced medicine at St Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin. He also worked at St Finbarr's Hospital in Cork.
