Michelle Asha Albert is an American doctor who specializes in the heart, known as a cardiologist. She is a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Albert holds a special position there called the Walter A. Haas Lucie-Stern Endowed Chair in Cardiology.

She has also been a leader in several important medical groups. These include the American Heart Association, the Association of Black Cardiologists, and the Association of University Cardiologists. Her important work has led to her being chosen as a member of the National Academy of Medicine and other respected medical societies.

Learning and Training

Dr. Albert started her college journey at Haverford College. She studied chemistry there and finished her degree when she was twenty years old. After that, she went to medical school at the University of Rochester.

She then completed her residency training in internal medicine at Columbia University Presbyterian Hospital in New York. She even served as the chief resident, which means she helped lead other doctors in training. Dr. Albert then focused on heart health, completing a special fellowship in cardiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. She also earned a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. This degree helps doctors understand how to improve health for large groups of people.

Her Work and Research

After finishing her cardiology training, Dr. Albert became a faculty member at Harvard Medical School. She later became an Associate Professor of Medicine there. She then moved to Howard University, where she led the cardiology department as the Chief of Cardiology.

Later, she joined the team at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Albert's research focuses on understanding heart disease. She studies how tiny markers in the body, called molecular biomarkers, are connected to heart problems. She also looks at how difficult life experiences, or "adversity," can increase the risk of heart disease.
