Her Artworks
Boy (1999)
Michelle Lopez first became well-known for her sculpture called Boy. This artwork was a Honda car covered in leather. It was shown for the first time in 2000 at a big art exhibition in New York. Her art often explores ideas about strong feelings, violence, and who we are as people. Lopez's work also looks at how events like 9/11 have affected art and objects. Some of her other works with similar themes include "Blue Angels" and "Strange Fruit."
One art critic described Lopez's sculpture as "wonderfully balanced." It seemed to be one strange thing, yet also something even stranger.
Blue Angels (2011)
Another important work by Michelle Lopez is Blue Angels. This piece features three large, crumpled sheets of aluminum. They lean against a wall and are very tall. The inside parts are painted blue or black, while the outside is white or shiny. This artwork suggests that trying to make things perfectly might not always work out. It also makes us think about our own ideas of perfection.
However, the art also has a hint of celebration. The shiny surfaces look a bit like gift wrap. This suggests new beginnings and joy.
Smoke Clouds (2014)
In her Smoke Clouds series, Michelle Lopez explores the idea of things disappearing. She uses a special liquid called silver nitrate, which is used to make mirrors. She pours it onto large pieces of glass. These mirrored smoke clouds reflect the room and anyone looking at them. The cloud image seems to appear and disappear like a puff of smoke. This depends on where you stand and the light in the room.
Lopez makes us think about what an art object truly is. She also questions why artists want to create lasting symbols. Her work also makes viewers think about their own desire to "own" or understand art.
House of Cards and Barricade (2018)
House of Cards is an art installation that looks like a collapsing structure. It uses steel ropes and street rubble. This artwork suggests that even small acts of resistance can challenge big problems. Another recent work, Barricade, was shown in an exhibition called Ballast & Barricades. In this piece, a very heavy building piece is held up by scaffolding and ladders. It looks like it's about to fall, showing a state of near collapse.
Rope Prop Reversal (2023)
In 2023, Michelle Lopez had a solo exhibition called 'Lasso Reprieve'. One series of works there was called ROPE PROP REVERSAL. These pieces continue Lopez's interest in changing traditional art styles like Minimalism. She takes industrial materials and makes them seem lighter and more humble. This series responds to a famous artwork by Richard Serra. Lopez transforms his heavy lead sculptures into lighter, skeletal shapes. She shows how art can be supported by different materials working together.
