How the Festival Started

The idea for the festival began in 1998. A church in Kalamazoo, Michigan, wondered if a music festival celebrating different faiths would be a good idea. They got help from local groups like the Kalamazoo Community Foundations. Many community and religious leaders also shared their thoughts.

In 1999, they started planning. People agreed that a festival like this was a great idea! In 2000, a group from all over the area met. They decided to call it the Michigan Festival of Sacred Music. A special team, called a Board of Directors, was formed. Their goal was to make the first festival happen in November 2001.

Early Success and Growth

The very first MFSM festival in 2001 was a huge success! Since then, the Michigan Festival of Sacred Music has become its own independent group. It continues to plan and present these amazing festivals every two years. Many grants and donations from people show how much support the festival has. Community leaders and people from different faiths still guide the festival today.

In 2004, the MFSM tried something new. They held their first "off-season" event, which means it wasn't during the main festival time. This event was also very popular. The festival plans to keep offering these special single events.

The Sing-Along Messiah

In 2007, the MFSM started helping with another popular event called the Sing-Along Messiah. They teamed up with the First Congregational Church. This event usually happens every year on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. In 2007, over 500 people came to sing along!
