Mick Thomson's Early Life
Mick Thomson grew up loving heavy music, especially bands like Morbid Angel. However, he also says the Beatles were a big musical influence. He started playing guitar in local bands in his hometown of Des Moines, Iowa. One of his first bands was a group called Body Pit, formed in 1993.
Some of the original members of Slipknot, like Anders Colsefni and Paul Gray, were also in Body Pit. Besides playing in bands, Thomson also taught guitar lessons. He helped local students learn to play at a music shop in Des Moines.
Mick Thomson's Music Career
Mick Thomson joined Slipknot in the summer of 1996. He took over as guitarist when another member, Craig Jones, became the band's full-time sampler. Thomson's first album with Slipknot was their self-titled debut in 1999. This album helped the band become very famous.
His Famous Mask
When Thomson joined Slipknot, he started wearing a hockey mask. He bought it from a store. Some people have compared it to the mask worn by Hannibal Lecter in the movie The Silence of the Lambs.
Thomson's mask has stayed mostly the same throughout his career. He has only made small changes for each new album. He says he "pretty much nailed it" with the original design. He felt it showed who he was.
Playing with Other Bands
Outside of Slipknot, Mick Thomson has also worked with other bands. He played on a tribute album for the band Death. In 2007, he played a guitar solo on the song "Deliver My Enemy" by Malevolent Creation.
He was very proud to be asked to play on that song. In 2011, he played guest lead guitar on Necrophagia's album Deathtrip 69. Thomson also appeared in a music video for the band Lupara in 2007.
Mick Thomson's Equipment
Mick Thomson is known for using specific guitars and gear. In the early 2000s, he played B.C. Rich guitars, especially the Warlock model. His personal Warlock guitar was custom-made. It had special "HATE" inlays on the fretboard.
Thomson now mostly plays Ibanez MTM guitars. These guitars are handmade for him. They have special pickups called Seymour Duncan EMTY Blackout. He started working with Ibanez in 2003. This was when Slipknot was recording their third album, Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses).
He also uses different effects pedals to change his guitar sound. These include pedals like a Maxon OD820 and an MXR Carbon Copy Delay. In 2016, Thomson also started working with Jackson Guitars. He was very proud to join the Jackson family. He praised his custom Jackson guitars as "incredible."
Thomson has three signature Jackson Soloist guitars. They all have a unique design with a reverse headstock. They also feature his signature Seymour Duncan EMTY Blackout pickups.
