The Midlands Engine Strategy was a big plan by the United Kingdom government in 2017. It was announced by Chancellor Philip Hammond to help the economy grow in the Midlands region of England.
The government believed the Midlands was a very important part of the UK's economy. It produces about one out of every five things made in the UK! The plan aimed to invest £392 million into the region to make it even stronger.
What Were the Main Goals?
The Midlands Engine Strategy had five main goals to help the region and its people:
- Better Connections: To make it easier for businesses to move their products and materials around. This means improving roads, railways, and other transport links.
- Skilled Workers: To help people in the Midlands learn new skills for jobs. This would make businesses want to set up there because they would have lots of talented workers.
- Support for New Ideas: To help new and creative companies grow. These are businesses that come up with new products or ways of doing things.
- Showcasing Local Products: To make people proud of the things made in the Midlands and show them off to the rest of the world. This would help sell more goods to other countries.
- Improving Life for Everyone: To make the Midlands a better place to live, work, and visit. This would encourage more people and businesses to come to the region.
