Miguel Pérez de Almazán facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Miguel Pérez de Almazán was an important Spanish official who lived a long time ago, from around the late 1400s to 1514. He was born in Calatayud, a town in Aragón, and passed away in Madrid, which was part of Castile back then. He was a type of Spanish nobleman called a hidalgo.

His Life and Career

Miguel Pérez de Almazán came from a family with a Jewish background who had converted to Christianity. He became a very important helper to the rulers of Spain, King Ferdinand the Catholic and Queen Isabella. They were known as the Catholic Monarchs.

Becoming a Royal Secretary

Almazán first worked as a private secretary for King Ferdinand. After another important secretary, Juan de Coloma, passed away, Miguel Pérez de Almazán took over as the Royal Secretary for both King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. This was a very powerful job, like being a top government minister today.

People described Almazán as thoughtful, careful, smart, and confident. These qualities helped him rise quickly in the royal court. He moved to Madrid and, with help from Juan de Coloma, soon became a Chancellor. In this role, he was involved in signing important documents.

A Trusted Advisor

Miguel Pérez de Almazán became one of the most trusted and important secretaries to the monarchs. He was almost like a modern-day minister of foreign affairs, handling Spain's relationships with other countries.

His signature can be found on a very famous document called the Capitulations of Santa Fe. This agreement was signed with Christopher Columbus before his first voyage to the Americas.

Later in his career, Almazán was in charge of Spain's international talks with countries like France, Italy, and Flanders (which is now part of Belgium and the Netherlands). One of his big jobs was to help find good husbands for the royal daughters, Juana and Catalina, to strengthen alliances with other kingdoms. He also took part in signing the Treaty of Villafáfila, an important agreement about who would rule Castile.
