Early Life and Education
Miguel Sáenz was born in 1932 in Larache, a city in what was then Spanish Morocco. His father was a military officer. When he grew up, Miguel Sáenz went to the Complutense University of Madrid. There, he studied German philology, which is the study of the German language and its literature.
His Work as a Translator
Miguel Sáenz is famous for being a translator. A translator changes books or texts from one language into another. He mostly translates books from German into Spanish. Some of the important German writers he has translated include Bertolt Brecht, Günter Grass, and Thomas Bernhard. He even wrote a book about Thomas Bernhard's life.
He has also translated books from English into Spanish. Some of the English writers he has worked with are William Faulkner, Henry Roth, and Salman Rushdie. Thanks to his work, Spanish readers can enjoy these great stories.
Recognitions and Awards
Miguel Sáenz has received many honors for his excellent work. Since 1999, he has been a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry. This is a special group that celebrates language and literature.
In 2002, he was the first Spanish translator to get an "honoris causa" diploma from the University of Salamanca. This is a special award given to people who have achieved great things, even if they did not study at that university.
He was also chosen to be a member of the Real Academia Española. This is a very important group in Spain that looks after the Spanish language. He joined this academy on June 23, 2013.
Major Awards
- In 1991, he won the Premio Nacional a la Obra de un Traductor. This is a national award in Spain for a translator's entire body of work.
- On February 18, 2019, he received the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes. This is a gold medal for his achievements in fine arts, which includes literature and translation.
