Mihailo Đurić (born August 22, 1925 – died November 25, 2011) was a very important thinker from Serbia. He was a professor at the University of Belgrade's Law School. He was also a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, which is a group of the best scientists and artists in Serbia. He was known for his ideas about philosophy.

Early Life and Studies

Mihailo Đurić was born in a town called Šabac. This was in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. His father, Stevan, was a judge. His mother, Milica, was a schoolteacher.

After finishing high school, he went to Belgrade University. There, he studied many interesting subjects. He learned about law, which is about rules and justice. He also studied philosophy, which means thinking about big questions in life. He also learned classical philology, which is about old languages and writings.

In 1954, he earned his PhD in law from Belgrade University. This is a very high degree.

Teaching Career and Challenges

Mihailo Đurić started teaching at the Law School of Belgrade University in 1954. He became a permanent professor in 1969. This is called getting "tenure."

At the Law School, he taught several subjects. These included the history of political ideas. He also taught general sociology, which is the study of how people live in groups. Another subject was social science methodology, which is about how to study society.

In 1973, he faced serious difficulties. He was prevented from teaching at the university. This happened because of a public speech he gave in 1971.

From 1974 to 1989, he worked as a researcher. He was at the Social Science Institute in Belgrade. During this time, he also taught philosophy. He was a visiting professor in West Berlin and at Augsburg University.

Contributions and Awards

Mihailo Đurić was a leader in philosophy. From 1981 to 1991, he helped run international seminars. These seminars focused on the ideas of a famous philosopher named Nietzsche. They took place in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia.

In 2009, Mihailo Đurić received a special award. It was called the "Prof. Luigi Tartufari" Prize. This award came from the National Academy of Sciences of Italy. He won it for his important work in philosophy and law.
